Are you interested in stimulating your children's creativity, nourish their bicultural and bilingual heritage?

The Center of Excellence ROMANIAN IN ACTION (ROACT) offers innovative virtual classes and workshops for children, youth and adults with Romanian background or with an interest to learn Romanian. Our teaching methods are based on the core principles of Heritage Language Education that nourish bilingualism and address holisitically the bi-cultural identity of our students through project-based activities, play, authentic sources, critical thinking, and meaningful interactions with their families and communities. Our students gain pride and confidence as heritage language speakers and learners of Romanian, while developing a global understanding of the world.

What

Join us for a read-aloud event to discover the story of Nanata, written by Florin Bică and illustrated by Anca Smărăndache. Our guests Cristina Bejan and Gabriela Nenciu will read the English and Romanian versions of the story and will demonstrate how you can start teaching kids about cultural diversity early on.

Watch us live on Facebook and stay tuned to receive an interactive activity kit based on the book.

Nanata is the second children’s book of the New Storytellers, a diverse books project focused on the Roma community, initiated by Cu Alte Cuvinte/In Other Words ( https://www.cualtecuvinte.com/). Founded by Gabriela Nenciu, Cu Alte Cuvinte is a Romanian NGO that implements literacy and anti-bias projects. Their mission is to help kids become passionate readers who think on their feet and stand up for what they believe in.

Cristina A. Bejan is a Romanian-American poet, theatre artist, and educator living in Denver, Colorado. She writes history books, plays, and spoken word poetry (which she performs under her stage name Lady Godiva). Her debut poetry collection "Green Horses on the Walls" was released this summer. She founded the arts group Bucharest Inside the Beltway with artist Rucsandra Pop in Washington DC 2013, and since then they have had a full award-winning cultural program promoting local and international arts.

Cristina is passionate about education and inspired by the words of Nelson Mandela: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
